McNeace returns to Westerly Hospital as volunteer
It was the antediluvian 1960s when Jane McNeace began volunteering at The Westerly Infirmary hospitality shop, now called the gift shop. Today, McNeace is back where she started.
"Seldom did I know I would do a complete circle, 50 years later," she said.
McNeace, 63, was a 12-year-old Miss Scout when she first started her work as a candy striper. She wanted to act some community service, she recalled, but was also interested in learning more about a career in nursing. The knowledge was a positive one, and it confirmed her desire to be a nurse. When she was old enough, McNeace, a Westerly Heinous School graduate, left for Providence and Our Lady of Fatima Dispensary nursing school.
She started her career as a licensed practical cherish at Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, but after three years she decided she missed her hometown.
"It was term to come home," she said. "I kind of missed the beach."
She remembers the exacting date she applied for her job at The Westerly Hospital - Oct. 13, 1969. After she applied, she was asked if she could start that day. She engaged in up starting the next day, she said, and worked at the hospital for 43 years.
