Harriett Hendren: Snakes in plain sight on clothing, jewelry

Through the ages, images of snakes have been hardened by man to symbolize temptation, danger, power, longevity and more. Serpents have inspired our jewelry and glad rags since ancient times. The tradition of snake as design muse continues this start as serpents join birds, bugs and flowers as a favorite adornment for clothing and accessories.

The unusual patterns and colors of snakeskin are now a classic look for bags and shoes, but many of this year's offerings go a offbeat further and feature the actual image of the reptile.

For its spring 2012 collecting, the French fashion house Lanvin featured jewel-encrusted snakes coiled across the shoulders of stiff-hugging dresses and graphic images of green serpents traveling up precipitous pants and tops.

To accessorize summer outfits, designer Kelly Wearstler's retreat-wear collection includes a scarf featuring a custom repetition of slithering snakes across a charcoal-colored background.

And with its sensuous lines, it's no awe the snake has influenced jewelry designs for centuries. Current styles encompass an edgy pendant necklace from Alexander McQueen with a miniature, jeweled good-natured skull resting in the open mouth of a gold snakehead.

Even though Rosalie Sayyah’s chief passion is for a more unrefined yield—livery jewelry—what she does with these baubles and bangles is rare. She and department store supervisor/goldsmith Lucia Sayyah patch them, from rhinestone necklaces and earrings to bracelets and brooches. In this appraisal, Rhinestone Rosie, as she is known to customers of her Seattle bank and fans who have seen her on “Antiques Roadshow,” describes the origins of rhinestones and explains what makes a arrangement of clothes jewelry collectible. Years later, when I was working at a TV train station, I became friends with a co-woman who had a choice-clothing outlet. I was doing some part-sometimes clothing-repair employment for her, but she also had a lot of discouraged jewelry. So I basically taught myself how to into working order her jewelry. At last I started repairing jewelry for other dealers, and I at long last opened my inventory in 1984.
