Verdant Fields Presents “Arctic Son: Fulfilling the Dream”
An Alaskan wilderness documentary with Tucson roots
An Alaskan wilderness episode spanned 14 months and 5,000-miles, generating 90 hours of raw video footage. It would take 19 years before the fixed documentary emerged.
Now “Arctic Son: Fulfilling the Dream ” will be shown Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. at Country-like Fields Country Day School. Admission is $5.
This is the story of longtime Tucson stained-glass artists Jean Aspen and Tom Irons, their son Lucas and dearest friend Laurie Schacht. The foursome lived for 14 months in a log stateroom they built on the Chandalar River in the magnificent Alaskan Brooks Cooking- stove in 100 miles from the nearest people.
Lucas was six years old in 1992 when the kinsmen was flown into the remote Arctic wilderness with a year’s supply of dried provisions and the tools to build their cabin before winter. The family ultimately weathered a 600-mile canoe rove back to the world they’d left behind.
